Selling Alcohol, Gas at Same Site Protested
Demonstrators carrying cardboard tombstones marched in front of the Los Angeles headquarters of Atlantic Richfield Co. on Monday, protesting the sale of alcoholic beverages at the company’s convenience stores that also serve as gasoline stations.
The 24 marchers chose Arco, which operates 350 AM-PM mini-marts statewide, because the firm opposes legislation that would reinstall a statewide ban on alcohol sales at gasoline stations, said spokesman Leo McElroy. “Their message is you can have your gas and alcohol at the same time and enjoy them,” he said.
Arco spokesman Tom Murphy defended the company’s position, saying local government can do more to control drunk driving than statewide legislation can.
