The World : Punjab Legislator Killed
Suspected Sikh extremists in India assassinated a Punjab state legislator and sprayed a crowded Amritsar market with gunfire, wounding a militant Hindu leader and two others. A bodyguard for the Hindu leader, Surinder Kumar Billa, was killed. Police said that the legislator, Sant Singh, 40, a member of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s Congress-I Party, was fatally wounded near his farm at Lodhar, about 20 miles south of Amritsar, when two suspected Sikh extremists on a motorcycle opened fire. The extremists want an independent Sikh state.
