San Diego Prep Baseball Roundup : Little Ball, as in 15 Singles, Gives Southwest Big Win

Southwest High School did a lot of little things Friday in a 9-4 win over Coronado in a battle for first place in the Metro-South Bay League.

“I guess you just have to call us the singles team,” said Southwest Coach Rex Whitehead.

The title fits. The Raiders (4-2 in league, 8-6 overall) had 15 hits--all singles--and stole six bases in beating the Islanders (3-3, 8-7) at Coronado High. Southwest scored two runs in the sixth inning and three in the seventh to snap a 4-4 tie. The victory is Southwest’s first over Coronado in two years.

“You have to use what you have,” Whitehead said. “I can’t believe we had all singles, but look at our guys. We don’t have much size.”

The Raiders had at least one hit in every inning but left 10 men on base in the first five innings.

With runners at first and second and one out in the sixth, Coronado pitcher Sean Pruyn handled George Castro’s bouncer to the mound but threw wildly to third base trying to force Alfonso Silva. The ball sailed out of play and Silva scored to give Southwest a 5-4 lead. Alan Paranada, Silva and Enrique Dorado added RBI singles in the seventh.

Castro came on to pitch three innings of scoreless relief and pick up his third win. It was his first relief appearance of the season. Pruyn, who relieved Coronado starter J.D. Douglas in the fifth inning, took the loss. The Coronado pitchers eventually were done in by six errors.
