American League Roundup : Yankees Win Sixth Straight Game, 10-3
Bobby Meacham’s bases-loaded single drove in the tying and go-ahead runs in the sixth inning, and the New York Yankees stretched their winning streak to six games Friday night with a 10-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians at New York.
Meacham, who had only one RBI in the first 15 games of the season, put New York ahead, 4-3, with his two-run single off Jim Kern. Meacham’s single, which gave him three RBIs in the game, decided a knuckleball battle between the Yankees’ Joe Niekro (2-0) and the Indians’ Tom Candiotti (1-2) that included 19 walks, three wild pitches and four passed balls.
New York clinched the victory with six runs in the eighth inning off Kern, Scott Bailes and Rich Yett. Rickey Henderson had an RBI double, Ken Griffey delivered a two-run single and Mike Easler capped the outburst with a three-run double.
Niekro allowed four hits and six walks in six innings.
Kansas City 6, Boston 0--Charlie Leibrandt pitched a five-hitter, and George Brett and Darryl Motley each hit two-run homers for the Royals at Kansas City.
Leibrandt (3-0) faced the minimum 15 batters through five innings before Rich Gedman slammed an 0-2 pitch just inside third base for a double to break up the no-hitter. Gedman, however, was stranded at second, and only one other Boston player--Wade Boggs in the ninth--reached second base.
Dennis (Oil Can) Boyd fell to 1-2.
Toronto 2, Baltimore 1--Jesse Barfield hit a game-tying home run in the ninth inning and a game-winning double in the 10th inning for the Blue Jays at Baltimore.
The win went to Mark Eichhorn (2-0), who pitched three relief innings. Don Aase (1-2) took the loss.
In the Toronto 10th, Tony Fernandez singled to center, and with one out, Willie Upshaw walked. After George Bell struck out, Barfield blooped a double to right center.
Chicago 9, Detroit 7--Harold Baines hit his second home run of the game, a two-run shot in the eighth-inning, to break a 7-7 tie at Detroit.
After Chicago rallied for five runs in the seventh to tie the score at 7-7, Wayne Tolleson drew a one-out walk from Randy O’Neal (0-1) in the eighth, and Baines followed with a drive deep into the right-center-field upper deck for his fourth homer of the season.
Milwaukee 11, Texas 1--Teddy Higuera pitched a five-hitter, and Paul Molitor drove in four runs with three doubles and a single for the Brewers at Arlington, Tex.
The Brewers, who had lost eight of their last 10 games, snapped a three-game losing streak as Higuera improved his record to 2-1. Higuera struck out nine and did not walk a batter.
Oakland 11, Seattle 2--Moose Haas became the first four-game winner in the major leagues, giving up one run in five innings at Oakland.
Haas (4-0) left the game after five innings because of stiffness in his right elbow. The 30-year-old right-hander, off to the best start of his career, struck out six and allowed four hits, including Alvin Davis’ home run in the third inning.
