Orange County Roundup : Wheelchair Tennis Sets Programs

Beginning Monday, the National Foundation of Wheelchair Tennis will provide a special on-going program for four schools in Orange County.

The special program for physically disabled students will be conducted at Lord Baden Powell School in Anaheim, Carl Harvey School in Santa Ana and Valencia and El Dorado high schools in Placentia.

Wheelchair athlete Mike Watson of Garden Grove will instruct the two-hour classes, which will include tennis skills, strokes and wheelchair mobility on the court.

Funds for this program are provided by the Los Angeles Olympic Amateur Athletic Foundation. For schedules and further information, contact the National Foundation of Wheelchair Tennis in Tustin at 259-1531.

The fourth and final round of the California Amateur Grand Prix surfing competition will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Huntington Beach Pier, beginning at 7:30 a.m. each morning.

Competitors include U.S. amateur champion and CAGP men’s leader David Eggers of San Diego, women’s leader Janice Aragon of Huntington Beach and preseason professional leader Chris Adams of Carlsbad.

Tennis West Magazine will sponsor Demo-Day Tour ‘86, a free tennis show with an opportunity to test some of the latest models of rackets and shoes and to receive T-shirts and visors, on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Fountain Valley Racquet Club.

Tennis West is asking that people bring their old tennis rackets to donate to underprivileged youths. The donation is tax-deductible. The Fountain Valley Racquet Club is located at 9771 Garfield Ave. For further information, call 962-9357.

Leone Patterson, a senior forward for the Chapman College women’s basketball team, has been named a first-team, Division II All-American by the American Women’s Sport’s Federation.

Patterson averaged 19.4 points and 9.4 rebounds a game this past season to help the Panthers to a 17-10 record. She led the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. in scoring and was named the conference’s Player of the Year for the second straight season.

This marks the second All-American team Patterson has made this year. She was named to the Kodak Division II team in March.

The Los Angeles Rams will play a charity basketball game at 7 p.m. on May 4 at Chapman College against the Chapman basketball team alumni.

The game will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Stanton. Tickets, priced at $5 for adults and $2 for anyone 15 and under, may be purchased at the Chapman College Gymnasium the night of the game or by calling the Boys and Girls Club of Stanton at 891-0740.

Rams players scheduled to participate include cornerback LeRoy Irvin, safety Johnnie Johnson, kicker Mike Lansford, wide receiver Ron Brown, running back Charles White, linebacker Jim Collins, center Doug Smith, defensive end Reggie Doss, tight end James McDonald and assistant equipment manager Todd Hewit.

The Children’s Hospital of Orange County Padrinos men’s volunteer support group will stage its 5 Vic Braden/CHOC Padrinos Tennis tournament on the weekends of May 3-4 and 10-11. The preliminary matches will be played at eight clubs in the county on the first weekend with the semifinals and finals at the John Wayne Tennis Club in Newport Beach on the 10th and 11th. . . . His duties as a Pirate assistant have yet to be determined. . . . Cypress College Athletic Director Dick Van Voorhis announced this week that Cypress will field a soccer team next fall and Tony Baca will be the coach. . . . Eugenio Juarez has been named the women’s soccer coach at UC Irvine, replacing Matt Etchison, who has resigned. A UCI graduate, Juarez coached the Estancia High School boys’ soccer team for the last three years and was named CIF Southern Section and Orange County Coach of the Year in 1985, when he led the Eagles to the section 2-A championship. . . . Cypress College softball player Joelle Wilkerson (Magnolia High School) has signed a letter of intent to attend Arizona State next fall. Janet Jenson, a member of the Cypress women’s volleyball team, signed to attend Chapman next fall. . . . Lisa Meyers, a senior at Mission Viejo High School, has accepted a four-year swimming scholarship to the University of California. Myers, a four-year high school All-American, competes for Mission Viejo and for the Mission Viejo Nadadores.
