Deaver Inquiry ‘Ridiculous,’ President Says
President Reagan said today he thinks it is “ridiculous” to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the activities of Michael K. Deaver, his former aide who took up lobbying.
Five Democratic senators asked Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III on Thursday to seek a special prosecutor to investigate Deaver’s lobbying for possible conflicts of interest. (Story, Page 7)
“We believe that the alleged facts which have been widely written about in the news media are sufficiently specific to trigger the statute” calling for a special prosecutor, their letter to Meese said.
Reagan was asked what he thinks about appointing a special prosecutor to look into his friend’s operations as he stepped off Air Force One in Los Angeles.
“I think the whole thing is ridiculous,” said the President, who had left Washington earlier in the day on the first leg of his trip to the Tokyo economic summit.
