‘LEO & LIZ’: HO AND HUM
The premiere of “Leo & Liz in Beverly Hills” (8:30 tonight on Channels 2 and 8) is about as unfunny as a sitcom can get.
Harvey Korman and Valerie Perrine play newly monied Easterners who have moved to a Beverly Hills mansion and are trying to fit in. No, there is no resemblance to “Down and Out in Beverly Hills.”
Try “Beverly Hills Nouveau Richebillies.”
Leo and Liz and Mitzi (Sue Ball), Liz’s married daughter from a previous marriage, spend the first episode planning their first “A” party and fretting about their lack of star-quality guests. If only they could corral Liberace. And that’s where the high jinks are supposed to begin.
But they turn out to be low jinks.
Leo and Liz have a zany handyman (Michael J. Pollard), a wise-cracking maid (Julie Payne), a pushy neighbor (Deborah Harmon) and a witless opening script worth about an “F.” It is directed by funnyman Steve Martin, who created this CBS series, it seems, while wearing his famous arrow. An apology may be in order.
Well, excuuuuuuuuuuse me!
