India Places Two Species of Frogs Under Protection

NEW DELHI — Two species of frogs have been placed under wildlife protection laws because a growing gastronomic demand for their legs in foreign countries threatens to make them extinct, Environment Minister Z. R. Ansari said Wednesday.
The laws require those in the frog trade to obtain trapping and dealership licenses to catch rana hexadactyla and rana tigrina.
India is the world’s largest exporter of frogs.
