Pomona : City to Get Track Money

The City Council this week adopted an emergency ordinance that will allow the city to collect one-third of 1% of all harness wagering at Fairplex Park. The measure could bring the city an estimated $100,000 this season, said Sanford Sorensen, director of community development.

The measure was based on a relatively new provision in the state business and professions code that permits local governments to receive a percentage of wagering revenues if no other services, such as admissions or parking, are taxed, Sorensen said. If not collected by the city, the revenue would go to the state along with the other receipts from the race track, he said.

Fairplex Park’s inaugural harness racing season, which opened this week, runs until June 21.
