Highway Death Toll Shows Dip in Britain

LONDON — The number of people killed in accidents on British roads in 1985 dropped to 5,199, the lowest total in 31 years, the government said Thursday.
Roads and Traffic Minister Peter Bottomley said last year’s toll, down 400 down from 1984, was the lowest since 1954, when 5,010 people were killed in traffic accidents. Since then the number of vehicles on British roads has risen from 6 million to more than 20 million.
