Malibu : Mountains Trust Given Grant
The Mountains Restoration Trust, a nonprofit organization that buys land in the Santa Monica Mountains to preserve open space, has received a $300,000 grant from the Quercus Fund to purchase parkland.
The fund was created by the Sierra Club to use money from a recently settled lawsuit to mitigate development. ( Quercus is the Latin word for oak).
The trust expects to use the grant to buy options on several different properties, said Elizabeth Wiechec, executive director. The Sierra Club has formed a committee to work with the trust on spending the money. Any land purchased will eventually be sold to the state or the National Park Service when their budgets allow, Wiechec said.
