I appreciate the balanced and well-researched information on water resources issues that went into the article (March 23), “Perilous Political Wars.”
Bill Boyarsky correctly identifies water quality as an issue of great significance in the Mono Lake controversy. The Mono Basin water supply provides some of the highest quality water available to our city. It is almost certain that any replacement water for this supply will be of lesser quality.
Mono Lake’s ecosystem continues to be healthy and productive, which was the case even in 1981, when Mono Lake’s water level reached its lowest level in recent history. Since 1981, wet years have caused the lake’s water level to rise 8 feet. This year’s above normal snowpack not only assures that Los Angeles will continue to receive an adequate, high-quality water supply, but it also means that Mono Lake’s water level will continue to rise.
