SPRING SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS
Poly 6, Grant 0--Ray Palafox shut out the Lancers, allowing six hits, struck out three and walked four while improving his record to 5-2.
The victory pulled the Parrots (6-2) to within one-half game of the league-leading Lancers (7-2).
Poly scored the only runs Palafox needed in the first inning.
Lou Porres walked and second baseman Harbind Walia followed with a double, Porres stopping at third. After Danny Gil popped up, catcher Tim Hunt lined a 2-2 fastball up the middle for a 2-0 Poly lead.
Poly didn’t score again until the sixth inning, when a two-out, bases-loaded throwing error by third baseman Rodney Beck allowed Joey Speakes to score Ploy’s third run. Porres followed with a two-run double and Walia singled in Poly’s final run.
Palafox had good control throughout the game. The only time he got into serious trouble was in the sixth inning, when Grant loaded the bases with one out. However the 6-1, 210-pound right-hander worked his way out of the jam by striking out Grant pitcher Don Hussey (3-2) and forcing Harlan Berk to pop up.
Poly travels to Hollywood on Thursday while Grant will play host to North Hollywood (5-3).
