Ten Italians were arrested and two others are sought in connection with the country’s second major illegal soccer-betting scandal in six years, officials said.
Torino public prosecutor Giuseppe Marabotta said the 10 arrested were charged with criminal association in connection with an illegal betting ring that may have fixed First, Second and some Minor Division games.
Italian soccer was rocked by a similar scandal in March 1980, which led to the demotion of the previous season’s champion, AC Milan, to the Second Division and the suspension of several top players for several years.
In slightly more than a month, Italy will be defending its 1982 World Cup title in Mexico.
