Graduation ceremonies were held Saturday for 41 new Los Angeles firefighters, including the 10th woman to survive the rigorous training, authorities said. The graduation ceremony at the Fire Department’s recruit training academy at Fire Station 89 in North Hollywood, included a simulated fire rescue, use of a life net and high-rise rappelling. Chief Donald Manning said he was impressed with the high caliber of firefighters in the first class to graduate from the training academy in the department’s centennial year. “I am also impressed with the aggressive, ongoing affirmative action program that has produced these high-caliber firefighters who are now embarking on their careers at the close of our first ‘Century of Service,’ ” Manning said.
