SPRING SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Pater Noster Stops Chaminade, 6-2

Pater Noster High upset Chaminade, 6-2, Friday, handing the Eagles their first Santa Fe League loss. Chaminade is ranked No. 2 in the Southern Section 2-A.

Pater Noster broke the game open in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on two hits and two Chaminade errors. Pater Noster third baseman Carlos Robles was 2 for 4 and scored two runs. Teammate Tony Sanchez was 2 for 3 with a run batted in. He also scored a run.

Pater Noster is 12-4 overall and 3-2 in Santa Fe League. Chaminade dropped to 9-3 overall and 4-1 in league.

Providence 7, Queen of Angels 0--Providence, ranked No. 1 in Southern Section Small Schools Division, was led by shortstop Adam Grant (3 for 4), first baseman Jeff Cirillo (2 for 4) and second baseman Steve Ross (2 for 2) in a nonleague game.

Providence pitcher Kevin Miller struck out 11 and walked three, while scattering three hits.

Hart 12, Burroughs (B) 2--Hart held a 5-2 lead then dashed Burroughs’ chances of a rally in the Foothill League game by getting seven runs on five hits in the sixth inning.

Hart’s Sheldon Sparks stole four bases, including home in the fifth inning. Teammate David Lee was 2 for 2 with two RBIs, while Tim Nedin was 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Burbank 3, San Gabriel 0--John Buller hit a home run in the second inning to spark Burbank to a Foothill League victory at San Gabriel. Leis Christofferson threw a four-hitter and struck out eight for Burbank.

Montclair Prep 17, LaVerne Lutheran 4--Reggie Smith hit two home runs,and teammates Jeff Light, Curtis Minks and Frank Charles each added home runs as Montclair Prep remained unbeaten in Alpha League play. LaVerne Lutheran jumped out to an early 4-3 lead in the first inning, but Montclair Prep collected 17 hits on the afternoon.

L.A. Baptist 12, Western Christian 4--Kirk Peterson had three RBIs, collected three hits in four at-bats and allowed two hits in five innings as starting pitcher in an Alpha League victory.

Oakwood 5, Windward 4--Scott Bernstein, Robbie Anker and Matt Cramer each had RBIs in the seventh inning to spark Oakwood to a Liberty League victory at Windward. With the victory, Oakwood remains unbeaten this year.

Agoura 4, Santa Clara 1--Mike King and Bobby Weer each doubled to lift Agoura to a Frontier League victory at Santa Clara. Donnie Rea allowed seven hits and struck out 10 batters as Agoura remained unbeaten in league play.

Santa Paula 7, Calabasas 2--Tim Nestlerode’s two-run home run in the sixth inning wasn’t enough to overcome Santa Paula’s six-run fifth inning in a Frontier League game. Ruben Segovia batted in a run and scored one and teammate Dennis Hernandez added two RBIs and scored two runs.

Loyola 2, Alemany 0--Tim Byrne hit a home run in the sixth inning and drove in another run to lead Loyola to a Del Rey League win. Teammate Lou Skertick threw seven strikeouts, walked five batters and allowed only two hits.

St. Genevieve 7, Cathedral 0--Rick Gonzales pitched five innings in his second game in four days. Reliever Alfonzo Gutierrez worked the final two innings in the Santa Fe League victory.

La Salle 12, Bell-Jeff 4--Jay Crews was 4 for 4 with hit two home runs, three runs scored and five RBIs in a Santa Fe League victory.

Saugus 9, Burroughs 6--Chris Joy of Saugus hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to break open a tight contest in a Golden League game. Teammates Dennis Moran’s fifth-inning triple highlighted a seven-run inning. Saugus second baseman Tom Dodson added a two-run double in that inning.

Simi Valley 9, Thousand Oaks 1--Simi Valley continued to dominate its opponents and has won eight straight games.

Todd Sullivan pitched the entire game for Simi Valley, allowing four hits, while striking out five. Dave Milstien led Simi Valley’s offense in the Marmonte League game, going 3 for 4 with a two-run home run in the second inning. Teammate Corey Aurand added a three-run homer in the third.

Royal 14, Westlake 12--Joe Summers and Tim Knorzer each homered to lead Royal to the Marmonte league win at Westlake.

Royal led after three, 7-1, but Westlake came back behind Mike Suarez and Ed Aguilar, who each had three hits. Jim Henderson was 2 for 3 with 5 RBIs, including a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh.

Dave Raper, who was 3 for 3, pitched the first five innings and picked up the win for Royal.

Camarillo 12, Newbury Park 8--Kevin Ochs, Billy Saylors and Jimmy Sparks each had two RBIs in the Marmonte League victory. Camarillo collected 12 hits and was able to score nine first-innning runs.

High School Softball

Calabasas 2, Santa Paula 0--Sophomore Carolyn Blake struck out 16 batters and allowed only one hit as Calabasas upset ninth-ranked Santa Paula. Lisa Morris scored on a wild pitch, and teammate Michelle Marcione singled and drove in a run.

Buckley 10, Brentwood 8--Laura Kirkpatrick was walked four times and stole four bases to lead Buckley to a Delphic League win. Teammate Wendy Wilcox added seven RBIs, and Nichol Bolduc was 2 of 3.

St. Genevieve 7, Louisville 4--St. Genevieve scored five runs without any hits in the second inning on seven Louisville walks in a San Fernando Valley League game.

Notre Dame 2, Corvallis 1, Michelle Petrello hit a two-out double in the fourth inning, and teammate Cindy Friedman’s double drove in Petrello to score the game-winning run in a San Fernando Valley League game. Friedman had two hits in three at-bats and pitched seven innings.

High School Track

Leuzinger 80, Harvard 47--Harvard junior Jared Strote cleared 13-0 in the high jump, but his team still lost the Pioneer League meet.

Poly 88, Sylmar 39--Helge Guenther, an exchange student from West Germany, won the 120 high hurdles (14.9), the high jump (6-3) and the shot put (45-3 3/4) to lead Poly to the East Valley League win. Teammate Jerry Gilmore won the long jump at 22-1 and the triple jump at 42-0, while Humberto Quintana won the mile in 4:40 and the 2-mile in 10:11.

San Fernando 89, Van Nuys 26--San Fernando was led by Shelton Boykin, who won the 120 high hurdles in 15.0. Teammate Lance Harper won the triple jump at 41-8, while Mario Winfrey won the shot put at 47-9 1/2 to help the Tigers win the Mid-Valley League meet.

College Tennis

Grand Canyon 6, Cal Lutheran 3--The match was tied, 3-3, after the singles competition, but Grand Canyon swept the doubles events to win at Cal Lutheran.

Clark Wulff, the Kingsmen’s No. 1 player, beat Cesar Luzon, who is ranked No. 14 in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and played for the Philippines’ Davis Cup team.

Mike Duffy and James Brunner also won their singles matches for Cal Lutheran (9-15).

JC Volleyball

Pierce def. Golden West 15-9, 15-10, 14-16, 11-15, 15-6--With the victory, Pierce (10-0, 18-1 overall), clinched the Southern California Conference championship. Michelle Podesta led the Brahmas with 21 kills, and teammates Steve Hauck and Ron Dugar added 17. Defensively, Pierce was lead by Mike De Los Santos and Steve Hauke.
