San Diego Prep Baseball Roundup : Reed’s No-Hitter Drives Point Home: Santana’s No. 1

Santana High School’s Bill Reed put on a one-man show Friday against El Capitan.

The junior pitcher threw a no-hitter and went 3 for 3 to help the No. 1-ranked Sultans to a 9-0 win over the Vaqueros in a Grossmont League game at Santana.

Reed also drove in a pair of runs to help Santana improve its record to 3-0 in league and 12-1 overall. El Capitan fell to 2-2, 7-7.

Jeff Gay started the Santana attack with a two-run homer in the first inning, and Sultan Dale Henson hit a solo shot to start the second. Gay went 3 for 3, and Henson went 2 for 3.

“He (Reed) was very overpowering today,” El Capitan Coach Steve Vickery said. “Ninety percent of his pitches were fastballs that he threw right past us.

“(Santana) is the No. 1 team in the county and they seem to prove it every Tuesday and Friday.”

Elsewhere in the Grossmont League:

Grossmont 12, Mt. Miguel 4-Grossmont scored six runs in the fifth inning and added three straight solo home runs in the seventh to beat the Matadors (1-2, 6-6) at home. Mount Miguel scored two runs in the top of the first, but the Foothillers (3-1, 7-6) came back with three in the bottom half of the inning.

In the Avocado League:

Escondido 11, El Camino 4--Andy Martin (5-0) pitched a two-hitter, striking out seven, and went for 2 for 3 with an RBI to key the win for the Cougars (8-7, 1-1). Escondido’s Jason Hobbs scored two runs and drove in four. Third baseman Gary Woods went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Cougars. Left-hander David Price took the loss for El Camino.

Oceanside 2, San Pasqual 1--Joe Letizia scored on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Oceanside (1-1, 6-6) the win. Winning pitcher Keith Combs (4-0) pitched a complete game, striking out four. Henry Reich went 2 for 2 and scored the other run for Oceanside.

In the Palomar League:

Mt. Carmel 9, Orange Glen 1--Mt. Carmel pitcher Tommy Cheek (4-2) recorded his fourth win in as many starts as the Sun Devils (2-0, 11-4) beat visiting Orange Glen (0-1, 7-5). Orange Glen pitcher David Miller had a no-hitter going into the fourth inning, when he gave up six runs on four hits.

Vista 7, Torrey Pines 5-Torrey Pines scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-3 lead, but Vista came back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the win for pitcher Roger Price (5-1). Frank Comeli (two doubles), Matt Sprint (two runs) and Mark Mata (a triple and three RBIs) each had two hits for Vista.

In the Metro Conference:

Marian 8, Bonita Vista 3--Back-to-back homers by Pat Whelan and winning pitcher Mark Cisneros in the fourth inning led the Crusaders to a surprise win over No. 6-ranked Bonita Vista. Both Whelan and Cisneros went 3 for 4, driving in three runs and one run, respectively. Bonita Vista’s Kip Korzep also hit a solo homer.

Montgomery 9, Coronado 4--With the help of 12 hits and six stolen bases, Montgomery pitcher Tim Hayward recorded his second win. Montgomery’s Rudy Rodriguez was 3 for 5 with one RBI. Daryl Crawford was 2 for 5 with a double and two runs scored. Steve Lucal had a solo home run for Coronado. The 10th-ranked Aztecs improved to 2-0, 9-3 with the win.

In nonleague games:

Point Loma 1, Mira Mesa 0--Mira Mesa pitcher Eric Estey walked in the winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh to give Point Loma (10-3) a victory over the Marauders (8-8). With one out in the Pt. Loma seventh, Jeff Gattis singled. J.J. Northam then reached second on an error and moved Gattis to third. Estey intentionally walked Walt Edwards, then walked Kelley Schlager on a 3-2 pitch to force in the winning run. Chris Reading (6-1) was the starter and winner for Point Loma.
