San Diego College Baseball : SDSU Salvages Split With Brigham Young

The San Diego State University baseball team narrowly avoided being swept in a doubleheader Friday at Brigham Young University at Provo, Utah.

After losing the opener, 9-7, the Aztecs held on to beat the Cougars, 14-13, for their first Western Athletic Conference victory.

In the first game, BYU (5-1, 24-9-2) was led by solo homers by Gary Cooper, David Willes, Dirk Thompson and Craig Angelos. SDSU (1-5 in conference, 21-15-1 overall) was paced by Tom LeVasseur, who went 3 for 3 with three RBIs, including a solo home run. Mark Beavers (4-3) was the winning pitcher for BYU. Scott Lawrence (4-3) took the loss for the Aztecs.

In the second game, SDSU led, 14-8, going into the bottom of the ninth, but the Cougars came back to score five runs, four on a grand slam by Thompson. Only a bases-loaded double play got the Aztecs out of the game. Mike Erb (6-3) got the win. Mark Newman (2-3) was the loser for BYU. SDSU’s Bob Parry was 4 for 6 with a solo homer and three RBIs in the second game. On the day, Aztec shortstop Steve Montejano went 6 for 9, with five runs scored and three RBIs.

Pepperdine 7, USD 2--Pepperdine scored four unearned runs in the seventh inning and received a strong pitching performance from Mike Fetters to beat the Toreros in a West Coast Athletic Conference game at USD.

Scott Shockley’s solo home run in the third inning gave Pepperdine (21-14-2) the early lead, but USD (19-17-2) evened the score, 1-1, in the bottom of the third.

The Toreros took a 2-1 lead in the fourth before the Waves capitalized on four USD errors and a hit in their four-run seventh. Pepperdine left fielder Steve Kirkpatrick’s single drove in two more runs in the ninth.

First baseman Sean Baron led the USD hitters with two doubles in four at-bats.

Fetters struck out 12 en route to improving his record to 8-3. Loser Dan Newman fell to 4-6.

The two teams play a doubleheader at noon today at USD.

USIU 12-5, Cal Poly Pomona 5-1--The Gulls (19-23) swept a doubleheader at Cal Poly Pomona to increase their current winning streak to nine games.

USIU had 19 hits in the first game. Jeff Ronas and Ron Green each had four hits and two RBIs. Ted Rivenark went 2 for 5 with two RBIs. Steve Hendricks also had a three-run homer for USIU. Rian Long (5-8) was the winning pitcher.

In the second game, USIU pitcher Mike Poteet (6-5) scattered eight hits to get the win. The Gulls had only five hits, the biggest being Bob Esquerra’s two-run triple. USIU’s Ian Kelly went 2 for 3 with an RBI.
