Hembree Places Second in Mt. SAC Heptathlon Event

Moorpark College’s Rene Hembree, competing in her first heptathlon, placed second on Wednesday in the Southern California Heptathlon Final at Mount San Antonio College.
The freshman from Simi Valley scored 3,986 points in the two-day event, 531 behind winner Cheri Slater.
Hembree won the long jump at 16-6 3/4 on Wednesday and trailed Slater by 93 points. Slater, who qualified for the state championships in the javelin last season, had a throw of 133-4 to Hembree’s 87-8 to forge an insurmountable lead.
Hembree closed the meet with a seventh-place finish in the 800 meters in 2:52.0.
On Tuesday, Hembree won the 100-meter low hurdles in 15.2, was second in the high jump at 4-11 1/2, was third in the 200 meters in 26.6, and sixth in the shotput at 27 feet.
