Government safety experts recommended that a special review board be established to investigate the maintenance program for Pratt & Whitney engines, which are the most widely used in commercial aviation. The National Transportation Safety Board made the proposal in response to problems with the Pratt & Whitney JT8D engines that began last Aug. 22, when one such engine in a Boeing 737 malfunctioned in Manchester, England, and caused a fire that killed 55 people.
