Lehigh Student Held in Rape, Slaying of Coed

EASTON, Pa. —  A Lehigh University sophomore was ordered held without bail today after he was charged with raping and strangling a freshman in her dorm room with a Slinky-style wire toy, authorities said.

Josoph M. Henry, 20, was arrested at his apartment near the Lehigh campus in Bethlehem early today, said state Trooper Joseph Bevacqua.

Henry, of Newark, N.J., was accused of killing Jeanne Ann Clery, 19, of Bryn Mawr, Pa., who was found dead Saturday morning.

District Magistrate John Gombosi arraigned Henry on charges of criminal homicide, rape, indecent assault, burglary, theft, receiving stolen property, robbery and aggravated assault.

Henry was ordered held without bail at Northampton County Prison.

Dist. Atty. Donald Corriere said the slaying apparently occurred during a burglary. He said Clery had been beaten, bitten and sexually assaulted, and apparently was strangled to death with a Slinky-type toy.

Dormitories were ordered locked and campus police were put on overtime after Clery’s body was found by a student who saw the door to her room ajar, authorities said.

The coeducational dormitory had been kept unlocked during the day and had no fixed guard post. Residents of the dorm needed keys to get in at night.

Assistant Dist. Atty. Richard Pepper said there was no indication the attacker knew the victim.
