San Fernando Voters Go to Polls Tuesday

Voters in San Fernando will choose three City Council members from among eight candidates Tuesday. Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.

One incumbent, Carmillis M. Noltemeyer, has been targeted for defeat by Mayor Doude Wysbeek and longtime Councilman Roy M. Richardson. Wysbeek and Richardson, who also are running for reelection, are supporting Daniel Acuna, a planning commissioner, for the third council seat.

Noltemeyer, in turn, is seeking to form a new majority on the five-member council by ousting her two fellow incumbents. She is backing candidates Beverly DiTomaso, chairwoman of the Parks and Recreation Commission, and Gordon K. Broberg, a planning commissioner, in their election bids.

The city’s predominantly Latino south side will have the opportunity to elect a second representative to the five-member council. Ray D. Silva, a buyer for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, hopes to join Councilman Jess Margarito on the city’s governing body. Margarito became the first Latino on the council in 18 years when he was elected in 1984.

Margarito and James B. Hansen, who was appointed to the council in September, are the only council members not up for reelection. The other candidate is Joseph W. Funk, president of a San Fernando security company.

In Hidden Hills, an election previously set for Tuesday was canceled in February because only three candidates filed for three available City Council seats. Instead, council members appointed the would-be candidates, incumbents Alana Knaster and Chris Van Peski and Warren McCamet, to the unpaid positions. They will be sworn in April 21.
