SPRING HIGHLIGHTS : Beer Gets 12 Strikeouts as Canyons Wins, 6-4
College of the Canyons, the No. 1-ranked baseball team among community colleges in the Southern California area, defeated Antelope Valley, 6-4, in a Mountain Valley Conference game Saturday at Antelope Valley.
Don Erickson’s two-run home run in the ninth inning provided the margin of victory.
Darrin Beer pitched a complete game for the Cougars (20-2, 7-0), striking out 12 and walking 2. Beer improved to 6-0.
David Coleao was 3 for 4 in a losing cause for Antelope Valley.
College Baseball
Cal Lutheran 0-6, Point Loma Nazarene 22-5--Robert Burden hit a solo home run in the second game to give the Kingsmen a split of an NAIN District III double header played in San Diego.
Mike Kusmak had a two-run home run in the third inning of the second game. The victory went to Chris Vanole, who recorded the final five outs in relief of Dan Pastore.
Burden’s game-winning homer salvaged what began as a miserable day for the Kingsmen. In the first game, Point Loma sent 15 batters to the plate in the first inning and had 20 hits in a game shortened to seven innings.
Cal Lutheran is 17-11 this season. Point Loma is 10-18-1.
JC Baseball
Moorpark 6, Cuesta 5--Moorpark extended its winning streak to three games with the team’s second straight one-run victory in Western State Conference action.
Moorpark had a 6-0 lead through eight innings in the game at Moorpark before Cuesta rallied in the ninth. Two Moorpark errors and Keith Otte’s grand slam brought the visitors within one run.
The Raiders (11-9 overall, 5-3 in conference) held on to move into sole possession of third place in the WSC standings. Cuesta (6-11, 4-4), which stranded 10 base-runners, dropped into fourth place.
JC Softball
Moorpark 4, Cuesta 0--Karen Mead tossed a complete-game, three-hitter and singled in two runs in the fourth inning to lead Moorpark to a Western State Conference victory in San Luis Obispo.
Laura Davis added a sacrifice fly in the fourth, and Karen Noble singled in Judy Fitzgerald for the final run in the fifth. Fitzgerald, with three stolen bases on the day, has 22 this season.
Mead, a freshman, struck out nine and walked none to improve her record to 7-4.
Moorpark is 12-7 overall, 4-1 in conference, a game behind Taft. Cuesta dropped to 3-3 in conference play.
College Tennis
Cal Lutheran 9, Point Loma Nazarene 0--Clark Wulff and Mike Duffy won their singles matches and combined for a three-set doubles victory to lead the Kingsmen in a one-sided match in San Diego.
Wulff, who improved his dual meet record to 16-7 this season, defeated Randy Candias 6-1, 6-4. Duffy topped Schuyler Murdock 7-6 (7-1), 7-5.
Wulff and Duffy teamed to beat Jeff Finger and Ron Cooper, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, in the No. 1 doubles match.
Cal Lutheran is 9-13 this season.
