Police arrested 40 demonstrators at the campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara, including eight who disrobed during a sit-in. Nearly 100 students peacefully occupied the administration building in a demonstration that began with a noon rally calling for the university to sell investments in companies doing business in South Africa. Forty people, who refused to leave, were arrested for investigation of trespass and were on their way to Santa Barbara County jail by the time police cleared the area. The rally, attended by more than 200, was held in front of the administration building, Cheadle Hall, which was draped with a sign declaring UC Santa Barbara “Nelson Mandela University,” in honor of the imprisoned South African opposition leader.
