The takeoff of a World Airways flight from Newark to Los Angeles was delayed for four hours by a telephoned bomb threat, police said. A man called the World reservations desk at Newark International Airport shortly before 1 p.m., (Eastern time) and said there was a bomb on board the airplane that was just taxiing from the terminal, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Officer Dick Coffino said. The caller did not identify himself as a member of any political or ethnic group and made no political statements. The plane pulled onto an isolated runway and police evacuated the passengers and removed their luggage, Coffino said. A search of the airplane and an examination of the luggage revealed no bomb and the flight was allowed to take off for Los Angeles and Honolulu at 5:45 p.m.
