Roundup : Tustin Loses Its First League Game, 8-0 : Pollard Hits Three-Run Homer to Lead Villa Park to Victory

Rich Simmons shut out Tustin High School for six innings, and Jeff Komma retired the side in the seventh after the Tillers loaded the bases to give Villa Park an 8-0 win in Century League action Friday afternoon at Villa Park.

It was the first league loss for the Tillers (3-1, 10-2).

Craig Pollard hit a three-run home run in the second inning and Mark Johnson was 3 for 4 to lead the Spartans (2-2, 5-12). Chris Bell and John Genova each had two hits for Villa Park.

In other Century League action:

Foothill 16, Santa Ana Valley 5--The Knights, led by John McTaggart, hit four home runs at Foothill to take sole possession of first place.

McTaggart hit a two-run home run in the first inning and a three-run homer in the second. Chris Cutliff hit a two-run home for Foothill in the third, and Mike Grahovac hit a solo homer in the same inning.

Grahovac (3-1) went five innings to get the win. He allowed five runs and five hits.

Canyon 4, El Modena 2--Mike Sliemers drove in two runs and scored another to led the Comanches (3-1, 8-5) at Canyon.

Sliemers tripled and scored Canyon’s first run in the first inning. After El Modena tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the second, Sliemers hit a two-run single in the bottom of the second to give the Comanches the lead for good.

Mike Townley (4-3) went the distance, scattering five hits and striking out four, to get the win.

In Century League action:

Santa Ana 16, Orange 4--The Saints (2-2, 10-4) had 17 hits en route to an easy win at Santa Ana. Santa Ana, which scored seven runs in the third inning to take an 11-0 lead, was led by Armando Olivares, who was 3 for 3 with two RBIs. John Hefler added two hits and three RBIs, and Jaime Franco had two hits and an RBI.

Fred Barrios (2-2) pitched five innings, striking out eight, to earn the win.

In Orange League action:

Western 7, Brea-Olinda 0--Rich Lodding (6-1) pitched a one-hitter, had a double, a two-run home run and three RBIs for the first-place Pioneers (5-0, 13-3). Mike Oziminski singled to left with two out in the bottom of the seventh for the Wildcats (1-4, 4-8) to break up the no-hitter and perfect game.

Savanna 10, Magnolia 4--Glenn Goss sparked a seven-run fourth inning as the Rebels rallied to win at Glover Stadium.

Goss singled and doubled in the inning and drove in two runs as Savanna erased a 4-0 deficit.

Ken Tolbert (3-0) pitched a complete game for the win.

Valencia 5, Anaheim 4--Andy Ruscitto had a single, double, triple, scored a run and drove in two for the Tigers. Winning pitcher Brett Gregory (2-0) was 2 for 4, scored a run and had an RBI for Valencia (3-2, 7-4). The Colonists are 1-4 in league and 4-10.

In Freeway League action:

Sonora 4, La Habra 1--Pitcher Brian Needham allowed only four hits and struck out six as the Raiders remained unbeaten in the Freeway League with a 5-0 record. Mitch Kaylor had two hits for Sonora, now 14-1 overall. The Highlanders fell to 2-3 and 4-8.

Sunny Hills 9, Fullerton 3--Richard Cruz was 3 for 4 with a three-run home run and four RBIs to lead the Lancers (3-2, 5-7). David Wackerman, who was 3 for 4, scored two runs and drove in one, also picked up his third win. The Indians are 3-2 and 10-3.

Troy 10, Buena Park 4--Mike Greer and John Woods each hit two-run home runs to lead the Warriors at Fullerton. Greer was 3 for 3 with three RBIs and Woods was 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Steve Shirley drove in two runs with a pair of sacrifice flies.

Chris Robinson, a junior right-hander, pitched six innings to get the win and improve his record to 3-2. Robinson struck out eight.

In Garden Grove League action:

La Quinta 8, Los Amigos 7--Troy Paulsen and Joey Dunn pulled a double steal, with Paulsen stealing home in the bottom of the fifth as the Aztecs (2-3, 10-6) took the lead. Paulsen was 2 for 3 with two doubles. Randy McGlenn (3-1) came into pitch in the third and picked up the win. Matt Phelps hit for the cycle and had three RBIs for the Lobos (0-5, 2-10).

Garden Grove 11, Bolsa Grande 1--Jeff Kanegae hit a grand slam, pitched a two-hitter and had 11 strikeouts for the Argonauts (5-0, 8-3). Garden Grove scored six in the second and five in the fifth to take control. Tony Beall (3-4) took the loss for the Matadors (3-2, 6-6).

Santiago 5, Rancho Alamitos 4--Tim Reynolds singled in two runs and came in the seventh innning with two runners on to pick up the save for the Cavaliers (3-2, 8-5). Anthony Candales (2-2) pitched into the seventh for the win. Joe Matquez stole four bases and scored two runs, also for Santiago.

In Sea View League action:

Saddleback 3, Laguna Beach 2--Danny Ontiveros’ 320-foot single to left field with the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Roadrunners the win at Saddleback. Saddleback (3-1, 7-8) trailed, 2-1, going into the seventh. Joey Mendoza led off with a single that struck losing pitcher Todd Fortune and caromed into left field. After Jeff Rowe sacrificed, Chris Silva doubled down the left-field line, driving in Mendoza to tie the score.

One out later, with Gary Jackson running for Silva, Myron Butler was walked intentionally. They advanced on a passed ball before Fortune walked Hector Santa Cruz to load the bases.

Ontiveros, who was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, then won it with a line drive down the line.

Mendoza went the distance to get the win. He allowed five hits and struck out eight. Fortune, who had a no-hitter through 5 innings, took the loss.

Woodbridge 2, Costa Mesa 0--Junior right-hander Kevin Caporicci pitched a three-hitter to lead the Warriors in a night game at Irvine’s Alton Park.

Caporicci (2-2) struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter.

Woodbridge scored its first run in the fifth. Caporicci led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by George Allen. Designated hitter Jeff Stoddard then singled Caporicci home.

The Warriors scored in the sixth on four walks.

University 5, Corona del Mar 3--Al Contrera squeezed in two runs in the third and walked with the bases loaded in the fifth for the Trojans (3-1, 5-6). Todd Krueger (2-4) pitched into the seventh inning to get the win. Jeff Baker recorded the final two outs to get his third save. Corona del Mar is 2-2 in league and 6-6 overall.

In Olympic League action:

Orange Luthern 16, Southern California 2--Andy Moore was 3 for 4 and scored four runs to lead the Lancers (2-2, 4-5). Jeff Ward, Chris Minoung, Mike Amling and Matt Wilson each had two RBIs. Ward Lookabough picked up the win.

In Sunset League action:

Marina 6, Edison 3--The Vikings scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat the Chargers at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley.
