San Diego Prep Baseball : Williams Strikes Out 14 as Clairemont Defeats Kearny
SAN DIEGO — Sophomore Andy Williams struck out a season-high 14 batters Wednesday as Clairemont High School beat host Kearny, 1-0, in a City Western League baseball opener.
After Scot Welish singled to lead off the seventh, Williams hit a batter and then gave up an infield single to load the bases with no one out. Williams (2-1) then struck out the next three batters to seal the victory.
“He threw superbly,” Clairemont Coach Hugh McMillan said. “He was primarily using the fastball. He was keeping it down and it was effective.”
Williams, who did not play varsity last season, gave up five hits and walked only one. He also struck out the side in the first inning.
The Chiefs (1-0, 4-4) scored their only run in the fourth. Mike Giordano singled and John Tuttle moved him to second when he walked. Giordano was picked off second, but Tuttle moved to second on a wild pitch. Designated hitter Charlie Eide then singled to drive in Tuttle.
Catcher Garth Klem and Giordano were 2 for 3. Frank Willes was 2 for 3 for Kearny (2-6, 0-1).
