Orange County Prep Baseball : MacMillan, Defense Lift CdM, 6-3
Corona del Mar High School got good pitching and timely defense in a 6-3 Sea View League victory over Estancia Wednesday at Corona del Mar.
The Sea Kings (2-1, 6-5) held a 4-3 lead when Eagle catcher Tom Campeau led off the sixth with a double to right field. Dan Dougherty singled to short center, Campeau holding on second. Sophomore second baseman Kent French, who had executed a successful squeeze that brought home two runs in the third inning, was called on to sacrifice again and came through, putting runners on second and third.
Leadoff man Ed Caron then hit a deep fly to Sea King right fielder Bob Ardell, who caught it and made a perfect one-hop throw to catcher Eric Luesebrink to get Campeau at the plate.
“It was a do or die and Ardell made a major league play,” Sea King Coach Jerry Jelnick said. “It broke the momentum that Estancia had and gave our team a lift.”
Both teams got good pitching. Eagle right-hander Mike Rosellini (0-3) went six innings. He struck out eight, gave up eight hits and allowed two earned runs.
Andy MacMillan (2-1) got the win for the Sea Kings, going 5 innings before being relieved by Robert Hess, who finished up. Hess came in with the two men on in the sixth and benefitted from Ardell’s fine play.
MacMillan also went 2 for 4 and drove in three runs. Hess, the starting shortstop, scored three times.
Three Estancia errors led to four unearned runs.
Estancia assistant head coach Paul Troxel said: “The errors killed us, they were crucial, but the big play was the throw to the plate. We challenged them and Ardell came up and made a great play on us.”
Estancia fell to 1-2, 3-9.
