Despite recurring speculation, Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl F. Gates intimated that he has no immediate plans to retire from his $118,000-a-year job. “I find the challenges so great . . . I don’t mind sticking around a couple of more years myself,” Gates said during a Los Angeles Police Commission meeting. His remarks came at a ceremony to honor three detectives celebrating their 30-year anniversaries with the 7,000-officer department. Gates, 59, became the city’s 49th police chief in March, 1978. He joined the force in 1949.
