One Slumlord Sent to Jail, Another Fined by Courts
One convicted slumlord has been sentenced to three months in County Jail and a second has been fined more than $11,400, the Los Angeles city attorney’s office said Tuesday.
James Harrington, 59, of Hollywood, began his three-month sentence Tuesday after unsuccessfully attempting to withdraw the guilty pleas he entered in Municipal Court in January to six violations of various health, fire and building and safety codes at the El Cortez Hotel downtown.
Jack Lerner, 62, of Studio City, was ordered by a municipal judge to pay an $11,418 fine after pleading guilty Monday to 13 misdemeanor violations of city fire and building and safety codes stemming from conditions at a three-story South Los Angeles apartment building.
