A United Air Lines Boeing 767 en route to Denver with 183 passengers lost power in one of its two engines Monday and was forced to return to San Francisco where it landed without incident, airline officials said.

A spokesman in Chicago said Flight 310 “landed safely with no problems and no evacuation was necessary” at 3:17 p.m. The passenger jet had left San Francisco International Airport a few minutes earlier.

An engine on the plane underwent a flameout “shortly after takeoff,” UAL spokesman Joe Hopkins said.

“The airline is going to do a readout of all the flight data recorders and try to pinpoint the cause,” Hopkins said. “The National Transportation Safety Board will observe.”

The passengers were rebooked on a scheduled flight to Chicago, which was rerouted to stop in Denver, he said.
