San Diego College Baseball : USIU Splits Two With Utah
SAN DIEGO — United States International University and Utah split a college baseball doubleheader Saturday on Players’ Field at USIU.
Rod Gust hit a two-run double to highlight a three-run sixth inning and give Utah a 4-2 win in the first game. After loading the bases, USIU starter Rian Long (3-8) was relieved by Corey Way, who gave up Gust’s double and allowed another run to score on a wild pitch.
Gust had two of Utah’s five hits. Curtis Carmen (2-0) threw a five-hitter and struck out five for the win.
Bob Esquerra’s fifth-innning, two-run double led USIU (11-24) to a 5-4 victory in the second game. Utah’s Chris Shultis hit a two-run homer with two out in the seventh to cut the lead to 5-4, but Way struck out the last batter to earn his second save of the season. Dean Weese (2-0) pitched only the first four innings, but got the win.
The Gulls’ Tom Bailey was 2 for 4 with a double. Shultis was 2 for 2 for the Utes (5-7).
San Diego State 2-4, Pepperdine 12-3--The Aztecs split the doubleheader at Smith Field. San Diego St. faces one of its toughest weeks of the season this week. The Aztecs play the Australian national team Monday and UCLA on Tuesday at Smith Field, and then play the Padres Wednesday at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.
