Policeman Mistakes Daughter for Burglar, Shoots Her

An off-duty Los Angeles police officer shot and wounded his 15-year-old daughter at their Woodland Hills home early Monday when he mistook the girl for a burglar, authorities said.

Alan V. Weinberg, 42, a 16-year veteran of the force in the West Valley Division, was in his upstairs bedroom at 3:30 a.m. when he was awakened by noise coming from the ground floor, Los Angeles Police Lt. Dan Cook said.

Believing that his daughter was asleep in an adjoining bedroom and apprehensive because of a previous burglary, Weinberg armed himself and went downstairs, according to Cook.

Moving through the darkened den, he opened the door to the bathroom and opened fire when he saw a silhouette and thought that he had encountered a burglar. When Weinberg turned on the light, he found that he had shot his daughter through the right shoulder, Cook said.

She was taken to a nearby hospital, treated and released in satisfactory condition, Cook said.
