Keeping Clean a Costly Process
How much does it cost to keep clean?
It cost TRW $5,833 a square foot for one specialized, 240-square-foot room in its new $22-million, 210,000 square-foot semiconductor manufacturing plant in Manhattan Beach.
The square-foot cost of the clean room is an industry record, according to Roger Anderson, president of San Francisco’s Rasmussen Ingle Anderson Architects and Engineers. The purpose of this high-tech, high-cost room is to make it possible for TRW engineers to manufacture silicon chips using a newly developed electron beam printer.
The process requires nearly perfect temperature control and cleanliness--â€1,000 times cleaner than a typical hospital surgical room,†explains Anderson.
Robert E. McKee Inc., was general contractor.
