MISQUOTING FIELDS

In Lawrence Christon’s “ ‘Straight Up’: A Tribute to W.C. Fields” (March 8), writer Bob Weide was quoted as saying that Fields never said “Anyone who hates children and dogs can’t be all that bad.”

However, the next day Randy Lewis in his article “The Ugly Side of Comedy” directly attributes the aforementioned misquote to Fields.

I suspect Weide, being more of an expert in the field of comedy facts, to have the correct information. Someone should reveal the truth, so you writers don’t look like such fools.
