Orange County Prep Baseball : They’re All Tied Up in Sea View League
University High School’s Jeff Baker scored on a two-out single by Todd Krueger in the sixth inning to give the Trojans (1-1, 3-5) a 3-2 Sea View League win over Estancia Thursday in Costa Mesa.
Baker’s run not only broke a 2-2 tie, but also created an eight-way tie for first place in the league. All Sea View League teams are 1-1 after one week of competition.
Winning pitcher Toby Foreman (2-0) worked 4 innings in relief, striking out three and allowing one hit.
In other Sea View League action:
Corona del Mar 7, Newport Harbor 5--Chris Greco went 1 for 2 with a two-run home run to lead the Sea Kings (1-1, 5-5) to the win at Newport Harbor. Andy MacMillan went 2 for 2 with two runs scored. MacMillan also pitched three innings in relief to earn his second save of the season. Winning pitcher Mitch Melbon (1-0) went four innings, allowing six hits. Newport Harbor is 1-1 in league.
Costa Mesa 6, Saddleback 5--Center fielder Mike Salladay went 3 for 4 with two RBIs to lead the Mustangs (1-1, 2-4) to the win at Costa Mesa. Salladay, a senior, is batting .647 (11 for 17) this season. Winning pitcher John Carlson (1-1) went 5 innnings, striking out four and allowing seven hits. Saddleback is 1-1 in league.
Woodbridge 9, Laguna Beach 4--Left fielder Paul Rodriguez went 2 for 3 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Warriors (1-1, 4-4) to the victory at Laguna Beach. Winning pitcher Kevin Caporicci (1-0) went five innings, striking out one and allowing six hits. Laguna Beach is 1-1 in league.
In Empire League action:
Esperanza 10, Los Alamitos 5--The Aztecs (2-0, 9-1) scored six runs on six hits in the fourth inning to gain this win at Los Alamitos. Designated hitter Andy Escobar went 3 for 3 with one RBI and two runs scored. Winning pitcher Steve Halweg (4-0) went six innings striking out five and allowing eight hits and five runs.
In South Coast League action:
Dana Hills 6, Mission Viejo 5 (8 innings)--Greg Erickson doubled home David Lyon in the top of the eighth to give the Dolphins (1-0, 4-4) the win. Lyon opened the top of the inning with a bunt single and was sacrificed to second. Erickson was 3 for 5 with one RBI. Bryan Hatch (2-1) pitched the final 2 innings for the win. Jay Hollis hit a two-run home run in the fourth for Dana Hills and Jack Bailey homered for the Diablos in the bottom of the same inning.
Capistrano Valley 6, San Clemente 2--The Cougars scored four runs on two hits and three errors, in the top of the seventh to gain the win at San Clemente. The Tritons had tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth on Slade Ponsen’s solo homer.
Irvine 16, El Toro 7--The Vaqueros scored seven runs in the fourth and five in the fifth to get this win at Irvine. Irvine (2-0, 5-4-1) got 13 hits, only one went for extra bases. El Toro is 1-1 in league.
In the Palos Verdes-Redondo Beach Tournament:
Loara 11, Westchester 2--Center fielder Wade Clester went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs to lead the Saxons to this second-round win at Loara. Clester, a senior who did not hit a home run last season, has hit three home runs this season. Winning pitcher Willie Trujillo (1-0) pitched 4 innings allowing four hits.
In nonleague action:
Canyon 5, Norco 2--The Comanches got 11 hits, with four batters getting two each, as Canyon (4-3) won at home. Joe Furukawa (2 for 4), Mike Sliemers (2 for 4), Todd French (2 for 4) and Matt Miller (2 for 3) provided the Comanches with most of their offense. Winning pitcher Larry Houck (1-0) worked three innings in relief.
