San Diego Prep Baseball : Mira Mesa Hits Big, but Bobbles Give Christian Win
SAN DIEGO — Mira Mesa almost won a game with its bats Thursday, but instead gave away the game with six errors as Christian won, 7-6, in the Crawford tournament.
After rallying from a 5-1 deficit to take a 6-5 lead, Mira Mesa lost when Christian scored two runs on miscues by the two players who had keyed the five-run comeback.
Mira Mesa catcher Mark Robert, who had four runs batted in, was charged with a passed ball and pitcher Mike Eicher, who had a home run, committed the throwing error that let the winning run score.
Christian plays at University City in the semifinals today at 3 p.m. Crawford plays at Serra in another 3 p.m. semifinal.
In other Crawford Tournament play:
Crawford 11, Clairemont 3--Shortstop Troy Coronado drove in seven of Crawford’s 11 runs with a single and two doubles in three at-bats.
Serra 9, La Jolla 6--An eight-run fourth inning enabled Serra (4-0) to come from behind and beat La Jolla (0-4). Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the Conquistadors got a two-run single from Ronny Lardizabal and a three-run double from Brian Smith.
GOODMAN-PIRATE TOURNAMENT
Fallbrook 9, San Pasqual 4--Two home runs over the 405-foot sign in centerfield at MiraCosta College gave Fallbrook (6-0) a berth in the finals against Orange Glen. T.J. Flynn, who was 2 for 4, hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Bill Dunckel hit a two-run shot in the third. Both players have now hit four home runs in six games.
Orange Glen 6, Oceanside 5--Orange Glen pitcher Brett Salisbury provided most the offense he needed to win, going 2 for 3 with the 3 RBIs.
HILLTOP-MOOSE TOURNAMENT
Grossmont 13, St. Augustine 3--Donnie Angotti, Lance Dixon and Aaron Albert each had two hits as Grossmont (3-1) beat the Saints.
Mission Bay 10, San Marcos 2--Sean Rees went 4 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs to lead the Bucs past San Marcos. Rees’ homer capped a five-run fourth that turned a 3-1 game into a rout.
GROSSMONT METRO CITY TOURNAMENT Patrick Henry 3, Sweetwater 1--Steve Plien hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to lead Henry (4-0) over Sweetwater.
Santana 7, Southwest 6--Kenny Todd went 2 for 3 with a double, a triple and two runs scored to lead the Sultans (2-1) at Santana High. Dale Hensen was 2 for 3 with a RBI triple in the four-run fourth. Mark Sherman (1-0) pitched the last 4 innings for the win.
