Bartow Shows an Interest in USC Job

Alabama Birmingham Coach Gene Bartow was on the USC campus Sunday and is reportedly interested in becoming the school’s next basketball coach.
Bartow talked to USC officials and three players--Rich Grande, Rod Keller and Brad Winslow--who are part of a committee to select the new coach.
The position was vacated last Tuesday when Stan Morrison resigned to become an associate athletic director at the school.
Bartow’s UAB team was eliminated from the NCAA tournament Saturday, losing to North Carolina in a game at Ogden, Utah.
Bartow succeeded John Wooden as UCLA’s coach but only remained at the school for two seasons, 1975-76 and 1976-77, before resigning to become coach and athletic director at Alabama Birmingham.
It’s believed that Bartow, 55, would like to retire in the Southern California area. He has a brother living here.
