SINGAPORE — Five people buried beneath the concrete and brick of a collapsed six-story hotel for more than two days were pulled to safety today through tunnels dug out under the direction of an international team of subway engineers.
The rescues, which sparked cheers and applause among the exhausted workers, brought to 16 the number of survivors of the unexplained collapse of the New World Hotel early Saturday after two weeks of heavy rain. Thirteen people were confirmed killed in the collapse, and as many as 60 were still missing.
