Averting a possible walkout, union workers at two Teledyne Ryan plants in San Diego voted Sunday to accept a new three-year contract with the company, a union official said.
Employees at Teledyne Ryan Aeronautical and Teledyne Ryan Electronics voted 594-340 to accept a new three-year contract that calls for 3% annual raises, said Rudy Rudolph, financial secretary to Local 506 of the United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America.
The union represents about 1,500 assembly-line, machine shop and other workers at the two plants, Rudolph said.
Under the new contract, he said, average hourly wages will increase from $10.75 to $11.10. Also, Rudolph said, the union was able to avoid a management proposal that workers contribute more for their health plan.
Currently, Rudolph said, hourly wages at the facilities range from $6 to $14.50.
Workers objecting to the new contract were mostly low-wage employees seeking larger pay raises, Rudolph said, adding that the union was unable to negotiate pay increases of more than 3%. Bargaining had been going on for three weeks.
The existing contract expired at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, Rudolph said.
