CSUN Gymnasts Prepare for Nationals With Win
Monica Mayes captured first place in the all-around competition Saturday night to help the Cal State Northridge women win their final home gymnastics meet of the season in preparation for next Saturday’s NCAA Division II Western Regional Championships at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Mayes, a 5-2 junior from Walnut Creek, Calif., totalled 34.60 after winning the vault and finishing second in both the uneven parallel bars and the floor exercise.
CSUN finished with 170.55 points, beating out Cal Poly SLO (163.20), Sacramento State (163.05), Alaska Anchorage (162.75), and Cal Poly Pomona (127.55).
CSUN’s Stacy Baker finished third in the overall standings, after tying Mayes for second in the floor exercise behind victorious teammate Debbie Meadows. The Lady Matadors also got an individual victory from Caroline Balet in the balance beam.
Northridge, 24-3, enters next week’s regional championships ranked No. 2 behind Seattle Pacific.
