Pac-10 Swimming : Stanford Takes Two-Day Lead

Giovanni Minervini of UCLA won the 100-yard breaststroke Friday night and Stanford took the lead in the team standings after two days of the Pacific 10 men’s swimming and diving championships at East Los Angeles College.

Minervini, who won in 54.05 seconds, defeated Olympian John Moffet of Stanford, who swam a 55.10. Dave Lundberg of Stanford was third in 55.50.

Stanford, seeking its fifth straight Pac-10 title, finished the second of three days of competition with 414 points. UCLA was second with 355 points and California third with 320.

Matt Rankin of Arizona won the 400-yard individual medley in 3:50.24. Olympic silver-medalist Pablo Morales took the 100-yard butterfly in 47.48 seconds.

Michael Soderlund of Cal won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:36.39, and Sean Murphy of Stanford won the 100-yard backstroke in 49.82.
