Joseph E. Bodovitz, executive director of the California Public Utilities Commission, will resign May 1 to become president of the newly formed California Fund for the Environment, based in Los Altos.
Bodovitz, 55, joined the PUC in July, 1979. He previously was executive director of the California Coastal Commission and the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission.
The California Fund for the Environment is a private, nonprofit foundation that will seek contributions from settlement agreements in environmental disputes. The money will then be used on projects to improve the environment.
“The money from the settlements . . . will be put directly into work for improving the environment” rather than into lobbying efforts, Bodovitz said.
The fund is headed by Melvin B. Lane, chairman of the board of Lane Publishing Co., which publishes Sunset magazine and books. The fund’s vice chairman is John E. Bryson, executive vice president of Southern California Edison and a former PUC president.
