About 150 elderly tenants of the historic Green Hotel in downtown Pasadena were evacuated after fire broke out in a sixth floor room, a Pasadena Fire Department spokesman said. Although the fire, which caused about $20,000 damage, was confined to the room and an attic, firefighters said the overnight evacuation was necessary because they were unable to determine whether electrical wiring had been damaged. The tenants were taken to the Pasadena Senior Center for the night. An official said a burning candle that got out of hand apparently caused the fire. The opulent Moorish-style, seven-story structure, built in the 1890s, now is a senior citizens’ apartment building and has been entered on the National Register of Historical Places.
