The Internal Revenue Service and state Sen. Daniel E. Boatwright (D-Concord) have reached an out-of-court settlement over an IRS demand that he pay $112,798 in back taxes and penalties. In 1984, the IRS claimed that Boatwright and his former wife did not declare $222,000 in income in 1976 from two investment shares in a shopping center. Boatwright said the IRS claim was incorrect and filed a petition for a hearing with the U.S. Tax Court. An IRS spokeswoman said the agreement was reached before the hearing. She declined to discuss details but an aide to Boatwright said the lawmaker “is paying nothing and owes nothing.”
