South Korea and China broke Japan’s gold-medal sweep in the Winter Asian Games at Sapporo, Japan, winning their first championships in speed skating.
Japan has won eight gold, six silver and three bronze medals in the 10 events already completed.
South Korea’s Bae Ki Tae won the men’s 1,000-meter speed skating title, covering the distance in 1:20.22. Makoto Hirose of Japan was second with a time of 1:20.37.
Wang Xiuli of China won the women’s 1,000-meter in 1:27.56.
