A pistol belonging to tennis star Martina Navratilova was confiscated at San Francisco International Airport when the weapon was spotted while her carry-on luggage went through a metal detection device Sunday.
“She was not arrested and no citations were issued,” said Lamont Foster, the airport duty manager. “However, the gun, which I think was a small-caliber weapon, was taken away.”
Navratilova told officials that the gun, for which she has a Texas permit, had been mistakenly put into the carry-on case by a friend who had helped her pack. She said that the weapon was normally sent in cargo-hold baggage, an airport official said.
Navratilova was in the Bay Area for the $150,000 Virginia Slims of California tournament in Oakland.
