Spring Sports Highlights : Canyons Relieved to Top Rancho Santiago

College of the Canyons got six strong innings of relief pitching from Chris Zavatsky, who gave up only three hits and a walk, as the Cougars beat Rancho Santiago, 9-8, in 11 innings Friday in the second round of the Casey Stengel tournament at Rancho Santiago.

Zavatsky, who took the mound after starter Frank Halcovich was tagged for 13 hits and eight runs, gave only three hits and a walk as the Cougars advanced to today’s 10 a.m. tournament final at Cerittos College.

“He was right on today,” said Canyons assistant coach Len Mohney of Zavatsky’s performance. “I couldn’t believe it. He’s always had that forkball, but he’s never thrown it like that.”

Canyons’ catcher Pete Kuld was 3 for 5, including a two-run homer and a double that brought in the tying run. Chris Cota, who singled, was balked to second and singled home by Andy Cutchall for the winning run in the 11th inning. Canyons (5-1) is the first team to beat Rancho Satiago (5-1) this season.

Valley 12, Scottsdale (Ariz.) 2--The Monarchs scored five runs in the first inning and coasted to an easy win in the third round of the Casey Stengel tournament.

Valley’s Dave Bogac went the distance and allowed just seven hits to pick up his first victory of the season. Jim Frazier had five of those hits, including two doubles.

The Monarchs were led by Dave Serpa, who went 3 for 4 with a RBI and a run scored. Ron Dale, Larry Aichler and Mark Gieseke had two hits each for Valley (6-3).

Valley 6, Long Beach 4--Chris Haslock entered the game in the ninth with the tying run on second base and struck out the side to preserve the win for the Monarchs in the second round of the Casey Stengel tournament.

Haslock earned his second save in relief of Dave Cossairt, who entered the game in the fourth and picked up the win.

The Monarchs’ Dave Serpa went 3 for 4 and had two RBI. Haslock, who started the game in center field, went 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Joel McCarthy of Long Beach went 4 for 5 with two doubles, a triple and a home run.

College Softball

CS Northridge 14, San Francisco State 0--The Matadors had their biggest offensive output of the season in a five-inning victory at Chico State tournament Friday night. CSUN’s Lisa Martin (3-1) allowed just three hits and had 10 strikeouts. The Matadors (10-3) have won eight in a row.

CS Northridge 3, Sonoma State 0--The Lady Matadors won behind pitcher Delanee Anderson’s second consecutive one-hitter. It was also Anderson’s second straight complete game.

Nancy Lucero singled, doubled and had two RBIs for the Lady Matadors. Barbara Jordan was 2 for 2 and scored all three of CSUN’s runs.

High School Baseball

Alemany 6, San Pedro 1--Sophomore Brian Rosselli pitched a five-hitter in his varsity pitching debut during the Westside tournament Friday.

San Pedro (0-3) held a 1-0 lead until the third inning, when Alemany (1-2) scored four runs. Chris Mouzis started the scoring with a two-run single, and Hugo Correa followed with a two-run home run.

Pat Aragon went 3 for 4 for Alemany.

Agoura 11, Moorpark 4--John Gillette was 3 for 4 with four RBIs for Agoura.

Don Rey was credited with the win, pitching four innings, with Jon DeGennaro pitching in relief. DeGennaro also hit a home run with a man on in the sixth inning.

For Moorpark, Willie Gutierrez was 3 for 4, and Tim Rothanzl had four stolen bases.

Chaminade 13, Oak Park 3--Pablo Suarez and Denny Vigo each hit home runs as the Eagles (2-1) cruised to a non-league victory at Chaminade.

Peter Dunn (1-0) pitched four innings of one-run ball and had three hits.

Calabasas 4, Fillmore 4--The season opener for both schools was halted after seven innings because of darkness. The game will not be replayed.

The Coyotes took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the third, but Fillmore scored three runs to tie the score.

Scott Cadenhead was 3 for 4 to lead Calabasas. Mike Kurinij and Jared Ricco had two hits each for the Coyotes.

Providence 22, Pacific Christian 1--The Pioneers scored 11 runs in the first inning and added 11 more in the following two innings to rout Pacific Christian in the season opener for both teams at Olive Park.

Third baseman Tony Ross homered and doubled to drive in four runs, and winning pitcher Jeff Cirillo had five RBIs on three singles.

The game was called because of darkness after 4 1/2 innings.

High School Softball

Montclair Prep 15, Bel-Air Prep 4--Tricia Cohen had three hits and four RBIs as the Mounties won in five innings at Bel-Air.

Samantha Crey (1-0) got the victory with 4 innings of relief.

Montclair Prep is 1-1.

Moorpark 13, Channel Islands 10--Monica Alvarez went 4 for 4 and had three runs batted in as the Muskateers won their home opener.

Jacquie Flasch worked four innings for the non-league victory.

St. Genevieve 4, Antelope Valley 2-- Junior Ann Baida went 1 for 3, with a triple, scored a run and pitched five innings of relief to lead the Lady Valiants (2-1) to victory at Antelope Valley. She also had nine strikeouts.

Senior Regina Aguirre (2-1) picked up the win.

High School Track

Harvard’s Bob Glass won the 100-yard dash in 10.98 and the 220-yard dash in 25.8 to lead the Saracens in winning the meet at Bosco Tech with 81 points.

Also contributing for Harvard was the 440-relay team of Joe McAdams, Glass, Mike Cetta and Randy Roberts who took first place with a time of 49.71. Harvard’s Steven Spencer won the 440-yard dash in 54.83 and the Saracen’s mile relay team of Cetta, Spencer, Seth Silverstein and Jeff Halpape placed first in 3:51.30. Bosco Tech came in second place with 50 points and La Salle finished with 40.
