Community College Baseball : Renko Leads Golden West to 4-2 Win Over El Camino

Gary Renko’s two-run triple in the eighth inning gave Golden West College a 4-2 win over El Camino in a quarterfinal game of the Cypress Kiwanis Tournament Thursday.

Golden West (4-2), which trailed until the sixth inning, also received two hits from Chip Damato. Adam Sanchez (3-0) was the winning pitcher, while Ethan Carbone (1-2) took the loss for El Camino (4-4). The Rustlers will play undefeated Cypress in a semifinal matchup of South Coast Conference rivals at 2:30 today at Cypress.

In other Cypress Tournament action:

Cypress 16, San Diego Mesa 12--Mark Baca, Chris Kocman and Rey Hernandez had three hits apiece as the Chargers improved their record to 11-0. Jim Jackle (2 for 4) was the leader with five RBIs. Jeff Mooney pitched seven innings, allowed seven hits and earned the win. The loser was Caesar Ruiz (5-1).

In nonconference action:

Saddleback 14, San Diego City 7--The Gauchos (4-2) hit three home runs in the third inning, including back-to-back shots by John Seeburger and Bill Dodd, in their easy win at Mission Viejo. Dodd also hit a three-run homer in the sixth and wound up 3 for 5 with five RBIs. Joe Holden added a two-run homer in the third. Paul Prinz (2-0) pitched seven shutout innings to get the win.

Orange Coast 3, Cal State Los Angeles JV 0--Sam August (3-0) pitched seven innings, striking out seven and giving up four hits, as the Pirates improved their record to 7-4 at Los Angeles. In nonconference college action:

Cal State Dominguez Hills 8, Southern California College 1--The Vanguards (5-5) had 10 hits but they stranded nine runners in losing at Dominguez Hills (9-2-1). Catcher Ron Nelson, who was 2 for 4, accounted for the Vanguards’ only run with a homer in the eighth inning. Third baseman Howard Wellema was 3 for 4. The winning pitcher was Bill Anderson, while Brian Otten (1-3) took the loss. Otten was ejected from the game in the second inning.
