Santa Monica to Oppose Mall Store’s Attempt to Obtain Alcohol License
In its efforts to prevent the proliferation of liquor stores in Santa Monica, the city will oppose a beer-and-wine license application by the new owner of a drug store at 1228 Santa Monica Mall.
Thrifty Jr. Inc., a subsidiary of Thrifty Drug, is seeking the license for the store the company acquired from Drug King.
The change in ownership requires Thrifty to apply to the state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control to renew Drug King’s “off-site†license, which allows the sale of take-home alcoholic beverages.
The city will file its opposition during a 30-day protest period set by the state board, according to City Manager John Jalili. Protests are due Sunday.
Neal C. Rocklin, whose application to sell alcohol at Ethical Drugs on the mall was denied by the Planning Commission and City Council, urged the city to protest Thrifty’s application. He said it would not be fair for the city to deny his application and then allow the Thrifty application to proceed without comment.
